Traditional Ultrasound scan
Prenatal scans work by sending out high frequency ultrasound waves. The reflected sound waves are then converted by a computer into the images that you see on the TV screen. Traditional 2 Dimensional (2D) ultrasound gives a flat black and white picture with little detail of how the baby actually looks.

3D/4D ultrasound is a new technology that allows you to see 3 dimensional colour images and videos of your unborn baby. With 3D/4D ultrasound you can actually see what your baby looks like before birth and you can see your baby move while it is still in the womb.

Dr Paul P Fogarty MD FRCOG
Dr Fogarty is a Senior Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at the Ulster Hospital Belfast and a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

In 1993 he became the first Doctor in the province to complete the Royal College Advanced Training in Obstetric Ultrasound. Dr Fogarty, and his staff have extensive experience in prenatal and gynaecological Ultrasound including, nuchal translucency screening, amniocentesis. ovarian cancer and polycystic ovarian syndrome(PCOS) screening

When is the best time to have a 3D/4D ?
Good pictures of your baby can be obtained at any stage. In the early weeks you will see the whole baby moving its arms and legs but the details of the face are indistinct. Later in pregnancy you will see clearer images of your baby.

Between 18 and 34 weeks there is still plenty of fluid available to get a clear scan and the baby has started to "fatten up" making his or her facial features more as they would appear at birth. 3D/4D image quality depends on the baby’s position, size and movement.

Will the scan harm me or the baby?
Ultrasound has been used in maternity care for the past 30 years and has been proven to be very safe. No X-rays are involved in 3D or 4D scanning.

Can you tell if the baby is a boy or a girl?
If you wish, you can find out whether your baby is a boy or a girl. Depending on how cooperative the baby is, and how good a view is obtained, the sex can be determined from 18-20 weeks onwards

What happens at the appointment?

Your appointment includes:
• 20-30 Minute Ultrasound Session (includes 2D, 3D and live - 4D)
• Sex Determination (if desired)
• VHS Video of the session
• CD-ROM with JPEG and video clips for use on your PC and for e mail
• Colour Photographs of your baby

Can my partner come and watch?

Your partner is very welcome to attend while your 3D / 4D scan is being carried out.

How do I book a 3D/4D scan?

Scans are performed frequently and there is availability within a couple of weeks. Your scan will be performed at Glen House, Dr Fogarty’s Private clinic in Crawfordsburn where the very latest 3D / 4D Ultrasound equipment is used.
